Web Developer - Government Executive Media Group

Government Executive seeks a media-savvy web developer to work on development and implementation of a wide variety of products. The work will center on new product development for desktop and mobile, in addition to improving GEMG’s existing websites (GovExec.com, Nextgov.com and newly-launched DefenseOne.com) and mobile products and adding onto a custom Python/Django CMS.

The ideal candidate will have experience building elegant and intuitive web-based applications and products. This candidate will grow a strong understanding of business goals and customer needs and be able to consider the impact of design and architecture tradeoffs on UX, internal support, and technical operations. He/she will have proven experience and be comfortable working with a team of web developers. This position will report to GEMG’s lead developer.

Responsibilities Include:

• You’ll work with a team of developers, project managers, designers and reporters to create products that change the way people consume and share news.
• You’ll suggest new products and technologies to serve our audience and advertisers.
• You’ll be responsible for strategic project oversight, technical analysis, quality assurance & release management.
• You’ll balance a variety of projects using different operating systems and development languages.
• You’ll be encouraged to learn through doing. Our future plans include rapid mobile expansion, more tool-based development and launching new brands.

Qualifications of the Ideal Candidate:

• Web development experience in a high velocity environment / 3+ years experience in a LAMP environment.
• Detailed knowledge of web application development as well as relational databases such as MySQL and PostgreSQL.
• Proven hands-on experience with web application frameworks such as Django, Zend, etc.
• Experience developing cross-browser frontends using HTML, CSS, AJAX, Javascript.
• Experience developing content management systems.
• Experience with Python preferred but will train for the right candidate.
• Experience with mobile development is a plus.
• Experience with responsive frontends a plus.
• Organizational and analytical skills, with strong problem-solving ability.
• Ability to work independently, take initiative, and contribute to new ideas required in a diverse, fast-paced, deadline-driven team environment.
• Excellent communication skills.

Specific Job Experience:

• 3+ years creating complex, data-driven applications for the web using PHP, Python, Javascript, CSS, etc.
• 3+ years working with SQL databases such as MySQL and PostgreSQL.
• 3+ years working with LAMP server environments.
