Information Services and Technology (IST) is the central IT department at the University of Alberta. Reporting to the Senior Application Developer, Application Development, this position will provide application development services to the University, including management of development projects and sprint cycles, requirements gathering and management, client relationship management, software architecture design and mentoring of junior developers.

The IST Development teams use a common build and test environment to complete their projects. This includes source code repositories, database servers, web servers, software frameworks, continuous integration servers and project build nodes that can package and deploy applications.

Duties

  • Coordinates small development projects using a blend of standard Project Management practices with Agile development
  • Coordinates sprint cycles where development effort is required as deliverables for a larger institutional project
  • Liaises with clients and project sponsors; maintains relationships and engages stakeholders to gather and manage requirements
  • Analyzes business processes and identifies the needs of the requesting University unit
  • Participates in design reviews and architectural reviews
  • Generates design specifications and project proposals, including cost and duration estimates, for the new or modified system and acquires authorization to proceed from the requesting University unit
  • Assists and coaches less experienced staff in resolving analysis and programming problems
  • Works within development and support teams to deliver comprehensive solutions for requesting University units
  • Establishes and maintains contacts with a University unit requesting a technical solution
  • Provides customer support for client applications
  • Addresses and fixes any defects identified by clients
  • Answers questions and problems related to using an application; provides solutions for minor enhancements to applications; communicates with clients and identifies specific problems

    Qualifications

  • The ideal candidate will have a BSc degree specializing in Computer Science; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered
  • 3+ years of experience in software development
  • Experience leading teams within projects
  • Experience in Business Analysis tasks such as requirement gathering and process mapping
  • Knowledge of ITIL
  • Knowledge of application design principles and software lifecycle management and distributed application architecture
  • Knowledge of MS.NET application development using MS C#, MS VB.NET and other MS development technologies
  • Knowledge of Java development using JEE, Hibernate and web frameworks
  • Knowledge of Windows based systems for server side application deployment
  • Knowledge of object­ oriented scripting languages such as Perl, Ruby, Groovy or Scala
  • Working knowledge of application server products such as MS IIS Server; other RDBMS systems such as PostgreSQL, MySQL and MS SQL Server; Windows based operating systems for client deployment; source code management and security software utilized by development team
  • Excellent communication (oral and written), organization and problem solving skills
  • Excellent planning and estimation skills
