My understanding is that I can create maximum of 65535 x 65535 x 65535 blocks with 1024 threads per block. Does that I can have 65535 x 65535 x 65535 x 1024 threads of maximum ? If not what is the maximum number of threads I can have ?

Can anyone clarify this doubt ?

Your understanding is correct. You can launch 65535 x 65535 x 65535 x 1024 threads theoretically but due to resource constraints you may be not able to hit the maximum.

  • unfortunately i cannot answer that.. but i dont think anyone can answer as to exactly how many maximum threads will be possible(practically). It will depend on ur per thread registers and etc.. Sep 17, 2013 at 8:46

You can't just multiply all the maximum grid dimensions and assume that you can have that many threads, unfortunately. You have 8 MPs and a maximum number of threads per MP = 1536, so that makes 8 * 1536 = 12288 threads max.

  • @ Paul R: Thanks for your reply.But I'm using more threads than that. I tried multiplying 67107840 values with 67107840 values using 65535 blocks and 1024 threads per blocks and it worked. Sep 17, 2013 at 8:33
  • OK - I think the number I give above would be for active threads - you can launch more blocks than this but they will get switched in and out. As @Sagar mentions in his answer, resource constraints are probably the biggest limitation (registers and shared memory per thread)
