I need a FIRST aggregate function which returns the first element of a sequence and I will use that with HAVING clause.

this is a question which can be viewed as a continuation of my previous question: FIRST aggregate function which I can use with HAVING clause.

It turns out that only an aggregate function can solve my problem so I tried to create one:

It sometimes returns the proper result, sometimes not and I am quite not sure if I implemented it right. Any thoughts if I got this right in view of my requirements?

If if (it isn't, as @Mikael Eriksson points out) the order guarantees existed, you're not specifying an ordering in your query - tables don't have an order, so asking for FIRST without an ORDER BY appearing somewhere in the query is ill-defined. – Damien_The_Unbeliever Apr 12 '12 at 12:06

I think your problem is that IsInvariantToOrder is not yet implemented.

Reserved for future use. This property is not currently used by the query processor: order is currently not guaranteed.

So there is no guarantee that your function will be called in the correct order or even the same order between runs.

I don't know that much C# but I think it is possible to have two parameters to your function where the second is the field you want to order by. Save the pairs in a list and sort on the second field before you return the first value.

Update:

I don't do C# so there might be any number of errors bad practices in here that I don't see. But it looks like it works just fine in the tests I have made.
