Ok so I have some classes that are as follows...

I have tries testing is nameInfoStr != null and just testing NameInfo != null with the following block of code

InsuredOrPrincipal[] coInsured = xmlDoc.Root
           .Descendants("InsuredOrPrincipal")
           .Select(x => new InsuredOrPrincipal(x))
           .Where(ip => ip.InsuredOrPrincipalInfo.InsuredOrPrincipalRoleCd == "Coinsured")
           .Where( gp => gp.GeneralPartyInfo.NameInfo != null)
           .ToArray();

or .Where(gp=> gp.GeneralPartyInfo.nameInfoStr != null

I am using xmlDoc as a XDocument and i must call an array of InsuredOrPrincipal because there could be many. I need to test if the name nodes exist in the xml document. Because if they dont then I dont want to add that insured or principle to the array. Thank You in Advance

What is NameInfo in this context and what exactly is the issue? Perhaps you can try .Where(gp=> !String.IsNullOrEmpty(gp.GeneralPartyInfo.nameInfoStr)) ? – BlueVoodoo Apr 19 '12 at 16:12
    
Name info is just The parent node to a PersonName node which contains Surname, GivenName, and Nickname. But sometimes this node is missing when it should not be inside the xml and its crashing my read. So I need to put in an exclusion. I will give that a go and let you know. – tim.newport Apr 19 '12 at 19:02
    
No Such Luck @BlueVoodoo. I am getting an Object Reference not Set To An Instance of a Object. AKA This file does not contain the node NameInfo So It is not assigned to. – tim.newport Apr 19 '12 at 19:19
    
Ok, you are getting the error sooner. Are you sure gp.GeneralPartyInfo is not null? As in you don't need to do something like .Where(gp=> gp.GeneralPartyInfo != null && !String.IsNullOrEmpty(gp.GeneralPartyInfo.nameInfoStr)). I would remove piece by piece in your LINQ statement until I found the issue. Same goes for ip.InsuredOrPrincipalInfo.InsuredOrPrincipalRoleCd. – BlueVoodoo Apr 19 '12 at 19:25
    
No I have the xml file in front of me and can see what node is missing. The rest of the LINQ works like a charm. If the file has that node it reads it in and pulls the data in. It seems that however when i step through the process it is not even getting to the != null. It sees the first part and crashes because it is a class that has no instance. For the record you can not to && inside the LINQ statement. It causes a syntax error. – tim.newport Apr 19 '12 at 19:53
