I already have a working rope animation using rectangular bodies with revolute joints between. The problem with this simulation in box2d is that if I connect anything fairly dense at the end of the rope, all the chains start drifting apart.

I've read on several forums (mainly and that it is possible to achieve a "strong" rope in box2d using either a prismatic joint or distance joint, or some hybrid of the two, to connect the dense object on the end of the rope to a body at the opposite end of the rope, thus having a maximum distance constraint for the entire rope length and preventing the revolute joints from falling apart.

How I can use, or even modify, either b2PrismaticJoint or b2DistanceJoint to achieve a max distance constraint while still preserving the swinging motion of the rope?

Since you mention modifying joints, it may be worth looking into how difficult it would be to get the b2RopeJoint working in AS3, as that is really what you need here. – iforce2d Apr 22 '12 at 1:51
