In the following program I have a read and write through a server. But when execute write(), it prints out extra characters

The first "j" is entered by user(me), the second "j" is echoed by server. Why am I getting the "dhk" and "9" characters?

Because you disregard the actual amount of data that you received, that is rr and instead print the whole string.

 str_ptr = buff;

You also shouldn't do this str_ptr = buff; as this just copies the pointer and not the string itself. The buff is allocated on stack, so it may not longer be valid when the function returns.

thanks@Tibor. Actually I am planning on reading one character at a time from read() and then assigning a null character in the end to terminate the whole string. Hope it works! – jdek Apr 23 '12 at 1:24
