I have sketched an 'interactive timeline' interface that you can play on iPad in Safari, here:


As you tap or scrub left<->right on the screen, you'll see the displayed image change according to the pageX value of your touch. The trivial code simply looks up the x-axis position of your touch and calls an image from a pre-rendered sequence. Naturally, in the above case the code must fetch frames from the web (rather than from the iPad disk in the real case), so the playback stutters a bit until all the images are cached. Once cached, the playback is smooth.

  1. On first load (or refresh), the demo works just as I'd like -- as long as you keep the 'touchmove' in play. Once you end the first touch and attempt to resume scrubbing left to right with a new touch stroke, the playback breaks. You can still tap on the screen: the 'touchstart' call is working. But not the 'touchmove', until you refresh or restart. Referencing the code below, can you see one or more silly mistake(s) I've made?

Any other comments or approaches to the problem are welcome.

For those familiar with E. O. Wilson's 'Life on Earth', built with iBooks Author, there are several such 'interactive timelines' that play a rendered sequence of frames.

It seems the real issue is this: if a touch begins at coordinates within the images I am displaying, the 'touchstart' call is received but the 'touchmove' call isn't. Touches that begin outside the image bounds (below the image, for instance) work just fine. I'm at a loss to explain this. –  Kevin Cain Apr 28 '12 at 4:27
