This is a question related to the NDK and Android SDK. Currently, my C-code is calling a method defined in Java. This method is called callFromNDK().

Within this method, i am referencing an instance of the mediaplayer to play a short test tone. callFromNDK() get's called every 2 secs. And the test tone itself is one sec.

What i see is a (SIGSEGV), code 1 (SEGV_MAPERR), fault addr fffffff4 at times.

I am wondering if this is happening because the mediaplayer instance was created in a different context than the one that it's getting used in?

The native side of the project: The thread_function get's called periodically (2 sec interval) and that's where i am calling the function defined in Java code.

What is calling thread_function? Regardless if it's the specific issue, I think you could add some logging and exception handling around the mediaPlayer.start() - also it has been prepared at that point, right? Worth a re-read of the mediaplyer docs. –  Chris Stratton Apr 27 '12 at 18:33
    
thread_function is a function pointer registered while i create a thread. This is function that gets called when the thread starts running. And yes, the mediaPlayer instance is created and non-null. The app runs for around 15 or 20 mins and then crashes. The length of time it takes for the app to crash is non deterministic. Having debug logs around mediaPlayer.start() isn't helping since that's not where the problem is. As @StarDust noted, the problem must be in my native code. Can you give me some guidelines on how to debug the native code other than putting log statements? Thx. –  harikris Apr 27 '12 at 23:55

The problem may be in your code, but the dump indicates that the actual crash is in libdvm.so instead. So you need to figure out what your code might be doing to set the DVM up to crash. Logging the state of affairs at the last line of your code executed before the crash could help with that, particularly if it's a mis-use of the mediaPlayer object. To better identify the last point in your code use the address to line tool or objdump to identify the two points in libtest-jni.so that are mentioned in the stack dump. Have you tried running it in an emulator? Since it crashed in libdvm you would probably get some very useful logging just before the native crash.

The problem could be the following line:

j_cls = (*j_env)->FindClass(j_env, "<package_name>/<class_name>");

Is it safe to assume you replaced "<package_name>/<class_name>" with the actual namespace and class name?

yes. it's safe to assume that the package_name and class_name details are correct and that they are fully qualified. i did not try with emulator since the program required audio input to be working. but it's a good suggestion. i will try isolating the audio input part and use the emulator and see what happens. thx. –  harikris May 1 '12 at 1:52

By eye I see three errors in this code, but run with CheckJNI (http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2011/07/debugging-android-jni-with-checkjni.html) and Dalvik should tell you what you've done wrong. (You should run with the latest release to get the best checking. One of the mistakes I noticed won't be spotted by Gingerbread [and you'll get away with it in Gingerbread too].)

You should always use CheckJNI while developing and debugging. StackOverflow should probably make people check a "yes, I tried CheckJNI" box before posting any question containing the word JNI :-)
