I'm using multicast packets to communicate between some processes on localhost (e.g. distributing a video stream within localhost). I know that UDP is not a reliable protocol in general but for what I need it's working very well (almost no errors or dropped packets at all). Tested data rate is about 500-2000kb/s on localhost with RTP packets and H264 payload.
The problem is that Quicktime Broadcaster (used to set up the streaming) has a minimum TTL level of 1. That's really bad because the packets leak through the ethernet port to the WiFi router and completely saturate the WiFi (almost unbelievable at those rates, but true, see other posts on the net). I need to keep all the multicasting packets confined to localhost, thus preventing the WiFi problems.
The obvious solution would be to set TTL=0. That works as intended on my sample python test program but unfortunately that is not an option with QT broadcaster, i.e. TTL=1 is the minimum. Using another program to do the broadcasting is NOT an option, unfortunately.
What are my options? I saw some posts setting up the iptables and modifying the TTL level or blocking the packets but I'm not really sure I understand how the iptables (ipfw on Mac?) work so could somebody just write down a very basic example? Something of the kind "if the packet has TTL=1 don't forward it to the ethernet port". I'm not sure if I can use the DROP command. Would the packets be available for other processes on localhost after that? In any case please provide a working line of example if you can.
Another option would be using an additional router, but that's plain lazy and inefficient :)
Maybe I could even set up a proxy that does IGMP? That sounds complicated (I don't really know how to do it) and probably overkill.
Personally I'm hoping in the ipfw (or iptables) solution since it would be the most straightforward and elegant solution. A GUI for IP tables would be great as well.
