So I put my connectivity tests in and stop my JSON call for map pins. However, even with this done if the user taps on the map the app crashes.

It seems to be calling a method in the Google API's maps.jar for touch events but I do not have access to these right?

so how do test for it or is there a better way to check for this?

You are attempting to do network I/O on the main application thread, in your SitesOverlay constructor. This will not be reliable in production, leading to ANR errors ("Application Not Responding"). Please do your network I/O on a background thread, perhaps using an AsyncTask, and populate() the SitesOverlay back on the main application thread (e.g., in onPostExecute() of the AsyncTask). With respect to your current crash, since your code is based off of one of my samples, you might just start with mine, slowly changing it, until you identify where your error comes from. –  CommonsWare May 4 '12 at 19:34
