So, i've been working on this problem for a little while now and i feel i'm getting closer to understanding the problem but not the solution. Here it is...

I have a Activity (Class A) which calls another Activity (Class B) via startActivityForResult(). Class B is my OAuth handler, it preps the URL request before starting an AsyncTask to authenticate with the provider over the internet. It does this by calling an intent with that URL, which starts the browser and takes me to the user login page. I login and authorise the app which then takes me back to what I think is Class B. However, here is where the problem lies.

It appears that upon returning to the app, that Android has created another instance of my Class B activity and executed that onResume() method rather than the one that created the AsyncTask above. This is a problem, because when I call finish, all it does is kill that instance of Class B, and then just move back to the first instance of Class B. This is a problem because I need the result from Class B to be passed back to Class A so I know the operation was successful. If I then finish() the first instance of Class B, it passes back a RESULT_FAILED code back to Class A...

Am I missing something really obvious? Let me know if you want to see some code.

UPDATE: I've added some code to make this clearer:

Class A(When calling class B):

Class B(When calling the URL to authenticate with the provider, this is called within an AsyncTask):

intent.setFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NO_HISTORY);
myContext.startActivity(intent);

myContext is Class B. At this point the URL is loaded by the browser which allows the user to log in and authorise the app. The app is authorised and Class B is called. Some further work is done, and then finish is called. As above, when finish() is called, it has to be called twice. I'm doing this in an emulator, and sometimes I can see the animation for a change in activity.

Class B (Code that is called to close the activity):

Finish is called, however I need to call it twice. I tested this by disabling the automatic call to the above code and placed a button in the activity to execute it instead. As expected, I had to hit the button twice.

How is the intent to start the URL launched (From B)? Also with startActivityForResult()? Some code for that would be good. –  Urban May 6 '12 at 1:08

Inside Activity A, were you able to log two returns from finish()? One returning a failure and the other returning a success? (Assuming two instances of Activity B are created) –  Urban May 6 '12 at 19:45
    
Also, I dont think you need to launch the intent from inside an AsyncTask. You can do the prepping inside it though. And the fact the activity B resumes from the onResume() method is the expected behaviour. Since B is not starting the Intent.ACTION_VIEW with startActivityForResult, you must handle the result of the URL call in its onResume(). –  Urban May 6 '12 at 19:56
    
I'm not seeing two calls to onActivityResult() in Class A. Yeh the code for the intent call comes just after: authUrl = provider.retrieveRequestToken(consumer, CALLBACK_URL); which does need to be in an AsyncTask because it's a network operation. I can move it to the onPostExecute method, but think it's academic. –  Daniel Maclean May 6 '12 at 20:21
