I've been trying to get Django Celery working in my Django project using the examples from the Celery site but I haven't mananaged to get it working. Here's what I've done.

I installed Django Celery bur running pip install django-celery. This installed celery and the necessary libraries e.g. celery and kombu.

I added djcelery to my list of installed apps and ran the syncdb and migrate commands to create the tables.

I've installed RabbitMQ and created a user and vhost using these commands:

rabbitmqctl add_user trakklr trakklr
rabbitmqctl add_vhost /trakklr 
rabbitmqctl set_permissions -p /trakklr trakklr ".*" ".*" ".*"

I edited my settings file to contain these two lines:

BROKER_URL = "amqp://trakklr:trakklr@localhost:5672//trakklr"
CELERY_IMPORTS = ("app.trackers.tasks", )

I created a tasks.py file in the my modules called trackers:

I started the Celery daemon in a terminal window like this:

python manage.py celeryd -l debug --discard --settings=production

Now I opened a new terminal window with the Python shell to enqueue tasks like this:

The tasks never finish. They are constantly reported as "pending". In the window the celery daemon running, I don't see any changes. However, when I press CTRL^C. I get this additional text:

As you can see from the last line, Celery has got the task but it just stops there. Also i can't seem to figure out why it have to press that CTRL ^C in between. It's constantly pending. I've racked my head over this the whole day but can't seem to figure out why it stays like this for a simple addition task.

Any help would be appreciated as I'm totally new to this.

Be aware, PENDING does not mean the task is running! A task that's been submitted but is still sitting in the queue (and various other conditions) will be shown as PENDING. If you want to know if a task has started, use the CELERY_TRACK_STARTED option. –  Chris Johnson Aug 25 '13 at 17:33
    
Also be aware some of the backends, if it can't find the task id will always report it as pending: meta = self.get(self.get_key_for_task(task_id)) if not meta: return {'status': states.PENDING, 'result': None} –  dalore Jun 3 at 14:53

Fixed. This was due to my __init__.py in Django inside which I was patching some Python modules using Gevent.

Gunicorn uses Gevent and it seems that Celery uses Eventlet. Gevent's monkey patching of thread and multiprocessing modules causes hiccups in Celery.
