I'm trying to serialise an object to return it in Json format in order to create a graph. I am doing this in a class library and returning the string as part of a bigger report. I am getting an error however that says:

A circular reference was detected while serializing an object of type 'MyApp.Data.Shop'.

I was following this tutorial and expected a similar Json string to be returned (with more fields of course) - Tutorial

The error is being thrown in this method in my reportengine -

I'm trying to be relatively efficient with the code I'm writing, which is why I'm using the GetMonthlyShopSales method twice - I don't necessarily need all it's values so should I write a separate, more cut down version for my Json string? I am also not sure if this is my problem or not so if someone could help with that it would be great.

Just a piece of advice; it might be better to have an array that stores the number of items sold, where different indices in the array correspond to different currencies. That way you don't have to add 5 new fields every time you need to add new currencies (if you need to do that often) –  moowiz2020 May 10 '12 at 10:50
    
@moowiz2020 Thanks for that. It's the structure I inherited unfortunately. There will only ever be 3 currencies which is why I haven't taken the time to amend it. –  109221793 May 10 '12 at 10:52

Sure. Also, have you tried serializing a plain list with just numbers in it? I have a feeling it might be giving you an error because serializing an object might be problematic because the List class might have tons of stuff you wouldn't need. –  moowiz2020 May 10 '12 at 10:55

I suspect the problem is due to the Shop EF POCO class. Entity framework adds alot of other stuff behind the scenes. So even though your shop class my only have 3/4 properties, under the hood it probably has alot more. See:

Some people suggest Json.NET, or you can use a shop DTO class, and replace the Shop object in MonthlyShopSales with the DTO version.

It was the fact that I was referencing the Shop class I'd say. I've rejigged my code and I'm just passing in the Shop name instead and it's working perfectly. Thanks for the hint. –  109221793 May 10 '12 at 12:45

Json.NET solved the issue for me, JsonConvert.SerializeObject() did the trick. My context is a bit different, I've implemented a JsonModelBinder in ASP.Net MVC which leverages Json.NET instead of the MS serializer. So far so good. –  hoserdude Aug 23 '12 at 23:42

have a look here, it might help.

On another hand, I've dealt with both Microsoft deserializer and json.net. I think json.net is a way more effective and faster. There is also fastjson library.
