I need to extract the input stream of the process after I start it. Today I can get the initial information but the method doesn't return until I close the application (in this case the application started by the process: gedit and firefox). I mean, I know it just return after I close the process, but I'd like to have a workaround to get that prior to the process closing. See my code below.

I had the same problem and I solved it with using an additional thread.

class InputHandler implements Runnable {

    InputStream input_;

    InputHandler(InputStream input) {
        input_ = input;
    }

    public void run() {

             if (((char) c == '\r') || ((char) c == '\n')) {

    private void flushString(String s) {
     // any code to process data from stream

Hi Nikolay,thank you a lot for your attention. I tried your code, but actually it worked like mine. I mean, it prints the process information before I close the process but the program is still waiting the process to finish to continue. I wanted something that wouldn't stop the application. I mean, it would print, if there was something to print, and after would continue the app regularly. Do you think that is possible? –  Thaís May 15 '12 at 23:07
    
Hi Nikolay, actually now your code is working perfect to me. I just had to remove the waitFor() since I"m using the method for more than one process. –  Thaís May 16 '12 at 0:37
    
And also, comparing with my code, I noticed that the logic was similar. My error was that I was trying to see the errorStream and the inputStream in the same running thread. Creating two threads, one for each stream, solved the issue. Once again, thanks a lot! –  Thaís May 16 '12 at 0:39
