I have written the following code in the server side for a chat client using C. However, inside the while loop i need to check whether the client has exited the program, that is whether the connection with the client is lost. Please tell me how I can write such a code.

Now I modified the code like this:

On compiling, it goes fine, but on running, it gives the following error output:

You need select() to wait on input, close events etc. –  Rup May 16 '12 at 11:10
    
You fclose(log) on every iteration. Only the first one can succeed. –  wildplasser May 16 '12 at 13:10

if send return SOCKET_ERROR that means that the socket is closed or the connection is lose

so just do

if (send(connected, ctime(&t),30, 0) == SOCKET_ERROR)
 {
   // blablabla
 }

server.c:80: error: ‘SOCKET_ERROR’ undeclared (first use in this function) This is the error i got on compiling the above code. –  binish May 16 '12 at 12:20

@JohnSmith: SOCKET_ERROR is not defined on linux, so the check should be if (send() == -1) and then evaluate errno for the error. –  dwalter May 16 '12 at 12:23

recv() will return 0 as soon as the client closed the connection. -1 will be returned if there was any error while trying to get data from the socket.

see man page for more information.

so change your code to

and do not forget to check the return-value of send(), to see if an error occurred while sending data.

UPDATE: added error handling code for EAGAIN and EINTR.

I don't think that switch is really needed. If the above code is going to work properly, so will the following: int conn_closed; bytes_recieved = recv(connected,recv_data,1024,0); if(bytes_recieved == 0 || bytes_recieved == -1) { //statement } –  Harikrishnan T May 16 '12 at 12:24
    
btw, you probably also want to close the socket on error, not just disconnect –  Hasturkun May 16 '12 at 12:25
    
you should handle an return-value of -1 and check for errno since it maybe the case that you just got interrupted by a signal, and can safely retry. This is the reason why I chose switch(). –  dwalter May 16 '12 at 12:27

A small suggestion in your case, instead of giving an 'if' condition for checking the connection, do the same inside the 'while' that is instead of 'while(1)', give the condition.
