I need to extract data from the tables RawData and RawDataMeter and sum the 'Value' field for each unique MeterId for the last 10 minutes (relative to the TimeStamp). The RawData and RawDataMeter tables as joined via the RawDataId field using a INNER JOIN, records are only selected when the RawData.BuildingId and RawDataMeter.MeterId exist within the BuildingMeter table. I.e. the query needs select the fields from RawData and RawDataMeter tables only if they exist in the BuildingMeter table, it then needs to get the latest record for each meter (based on the TimeStamp) and then retrieve the last 10 minutes worth of values for that meter. Once it has these values, it needs to SUM each meters 10 minutes worth of values and output the results.

The query I have so far is:

When you say the last ten minutes, this is the last ten minutes from the most recent reading in the raewdata table? ie if a meter had gone out of service yersterday, it's last ten minutes would still be in today's result? –  Tony Hopkinson May 19 '12 at 13:07
    
Hi Tony. The 10 minutes is from the most recent reading of the meter. So the table will contain a mix of readings, and they could be from different days. –  Dan May 19 '12 at 13:31

I don't have enough time to write the query.

You need to do the following:

  1. Change the exists clause to be a join, on the two fields. You should add a "distinct" to the inner select to prevent duplicates from affecting you.
  2. Use the windows function "max(timestamp) over (partition by buildingmeterid)" to get the most recent time stamp.
  3. Make this a subquery (or use a "with" clause).
  4. Select the records based on the difference between the max timestamp and the timestamp
  5. Aggregate the results to get the sum.

For writing the query, it would help if you put aliases in front of all the field names. The casual reader cannot tell which fields are from which tables.

How about this:

  RawData.TimeStamp > now() - 10*'1 minute'::interval

  RawDataMeter.MeterId,
  RawDataMeter.BuildingId

If you have your indexes made correctly then this should run fairly quickly. Also, it seems strange that you're linking between the tables on the RawDataId. I would have thought you'd be linking on the MeterId value. I hope this helps.

The 10 minutes, is from the meter's most recent timestamp. Each meter could in theory have a different time stamp. Or could have stopped recording values. –  Dan May 19 '12 at 13:33
    
@Aaron Bertrand Sorry, I usually use postgreSQL. In SQL Server you have to use 'fn NOW()' or 'CURRENT_TIMESTAMP' or 'GETDATE()'. –  qwerty9967 May 19 '12 at 20:38
    
@Dan Can you explain why you are linking the tables on the RawDataId instead of on a MeterId. If you had a MeterId column in the RawData tabl and the RawDataMeter table, then this would be much easier. –  qwerty9967 May 19 '12 at 20:48
    
sorry, I should clarify. Each set of results for a a Buildings meters have the same timestamp, but the timestamp for a different buildings set of meters (latest reading) can be different. –  Dan May 19 '12 at 22:25
