So I have a very weird issue in which that when I run my app on the simulator and the iPad plugged in (running the app on the device with cable plugged) it all works just fine. However after running on the device after it's plugged and I tried to use the app, it crashes.. tried looking at the device crash logs and I am seeing:

Any idea why this is only happening on device and not when running the app when plugged in or simulator?

It seems that the NSZombieEnabled seemed to hide this issue. When I disable NSZombieEnabled it crashes now on the simulator and device.

If NSZombieEnabled is hiding the issue, then it is almost certainly a double free. Very strange that the Instruments template didn't pick it up... – MobileVet May 21 '12 at 21:07

I agree with Jim, looks like a double release.

I would utilize the Instruments 'zombie' profile to test for this situation. It can only be done in the simulator, but should show you exactly what is being double released.

Once that is 100% clear, it is typically pretty easy to resolve the situation.

It doesn't necessarily work fine on the simulator. When you over-release something, it's sheer luck as to whether it crashes or not. The over-release still happens though, and the zombie approach should work regardless. – Jim May 21 '12 at 18:39
And you can use NSZombies while running the code on your device. – Abizern May 21 '12 at 18:58
just tried using NSZombies from instruments and didn't see any leaks when reproducing the same step on device – adit May 21 '12 at 19:13
You aren't looking for a leak, you're looking for a double release, which is basically the opposite of a leak. Edit your scheme and enable zombie objects in the options of the Run section. – Jim May 21 '12 at 19:21

It looks like you're over-releasing an instance of AHInstagramImageData by putting it into a dictionary, then lowering the retain count enough for it to be deallocated. Then, when it's removed from the dictionary, it's released again and it tries to deallocate memory for an object that no longer exists.

Post the code responsible and you may get more detailed help. A crash log alone is not really enough to go on.

self.imageDataSource_ = temp; doesn't look correct. You're using property syntax, but a private ivar naming convention. Since your code compiles, you're using a property, but you seem to be mixed up about the difference between them. How are you defining this property? – Jim May 21 '12 at 18:36
