I have a contractor that wrote code like this all over the place when we execute sql queries:

The GetDataReader class was in an App_Code helper file and is declared like so:

Then I run my code locally (it does a ton of SQL for statistics) and run the same type of thing in two different browsers, 1 browser always crashes here:

Where is it actually crashing? The exception says in SqlCommand.ExecuteReader but the block of code I think you're saying crashes calls ExcecuteScaler. –  SirPentor May 23 '12 at 3:08

The DataReader doesn't look like it's getting disposed anywhere, and it should be. I'm at a bit of a loss as to why the code is structured the way it is. Why there is locking going on? Why is this guy writing SQL queries using string.Format()? I would not hire this contractor again. –  w.brian May 23 '12 at 3:14

Does "lock" statement mean, that you're using this stuff from multiple threads?
Don't even try to share ADO .NET objects between threads - they are not thread safe... It seems like more than one thread creates reader instance the same time.

@chris: 1) if so, than what is "lock" intended for? 2) Show us the code of PowerStatRegression.share.JbLog.SendResultSet method. 3) The namespace "StoredProcedures" make hints about CLR assembly on SQL Server side. Am I wrong? 4) If I'm right, does App_Code class reside in that assembly? –  Dennis May 24 '12 at 4:44

I think the lock is at the wrong level... The lock needs to be at the reader level. The open reader is being used after the lock is released.
