I am making a pac man like program for my computer class, this is what I have so far...I wana add ghosts to the program. But I dont know how to make it so that the program doesnt stop everything and waits for the user to input. Like when I use c.getchar() it stops the programs and waits for users input. Is there anything else I can use that wont stop the program so its possible for a ghost to chase the pac man... please help!

I didn't read your code (Shorten it to the relevant portions to make it more readable), but I feel like you're approaching this the wrong way. You'll probably want to use a KeyListener. This will allow you to "listen" for keys being pressed concurrently while your program runs.

It looks like your teacher made a custom Console class which you are using to draw you pacman game?

I googled "hsa.Console" and found some Javadoc for it.. so assuming I'm this is the Console class you are using: http://www.brentwoodhigh.com/apcs/holt/hsa-javadoc/Console.html

According to your teacher's Javadoc Console implements KeyListener so you can subclass his Console with your own and listen for key events in there.

Example:

   public void keyPressed(KeyEvent e) {
      super.keyPressed(e); // Call your teacher's code in case he does something
      // set some shared variable with the key that was typed
      // you'll read this shared variable in your main loop
   }
}

In your main you'll do:

c = new MyConsole();

instead of

c = new Console();

In your main loop you'll want to poll for the last key that was entered... Technically you'll need a shared volatile variable but I guess your teacher either doesn't know that or is introducing you to threading ridiculously early.

Your file will look something like:

Of course not having access to the library your teacher has made I can only make educated guesses on what'll work.

My teacher did not make a library, I believe it came with the program "ready to program Java" from compsci.ca/holtsoft, after downloading the program go to file --> new -->hsa consol template, I dont quite understand whats happening in your code... –  user1413945 May 24 '12 at 3:21
