we are trying to develop a mobile application using GWT 2.4 but now it seems I hit a wall and cannot solve the problem.

We have written 4 Overlay Types for the Data we receive from a server as JSON and 1 Overlay Type with static utility functions.

Depending on where we use those utility function we get this error :

java.lang.ClassFormatError: Illegal method name "<init>$" in class com/our/company/DataUtil
    at java.lang.ClassLoader.defineClass1(Native Method)
    at java.lang.ClassLoader.defineClass(ClassLoader.java:791)

Things I have tested:

  • Calling various methods from DataUtil in a module which is loaded via deferred binding

Result: No matter which method is called, the error shows up during compile time with the additional message :

[ERROR] [wwapp] Failed to create an instance of'com.our.company.mobileapp.client.model.data.GimmeData' via deferred binding
  • Calling methods from DataUtil in Activities:

Result: The error shows up during runtime as an alert popup.

there are restrictions regarding overlay types: see: OverlayTypes. Check if you don't break any of it, because sometimes it results in this error you've got. Especially: only final methods, only one no-arg protected constructor and no fields –  Tomasz Krzyżak Jul 21 '12 at 20:07

I think that the problem is in your *Data overlay types, because you declared instance fields:

private final Logger log = Logger.getLogger( "com.isp.wwapp.core.client.model.jsdata.CategoryData" );

Documentation states that overlay types cannot have any instance fields.

Remove it or make it static.

Try these steps

  1. Make sure that all the overlay types have a protected no-arg constructor.
  2. Make the native methods public
  3. Keep your overlay types simple and move non native methods into a different class

I may have reproduced your error:

It boils down to two overlay classes with overlay types which cross reference each other, where the Error is actually in the second overlay class.

Main:

The error is in the last page in of the second Overlay class: int i = 0;.

However the error message comes up in DataUtil.

    at java.lang.ClassLoader.defineClassCond(Unknown Source)
    at java.lang.ClassLoader.defineClass(Unknown Source)

    at com.google.gwt.dev.shell.CompilingClassLoader.findClass(CompilingClassLoader.java:1085)

I guess your error ocures in one of your overlay classes. Check if each of those works alone!
