Please help! I am desperate here!!!!

I am having trouble starting my service. I moved it to an inner class within my Activity and I cannot get it to start!

I don't know if I have to change something in my Manifest or call it differently.

I tried calling it using "Intent intent = new Intent(HW07.this, PrimeService.class);" and I got the following error:

05-24 13:15:22.662: W/ActivityManager(80): Unable to start service Intent { cmp=jschuler.cs211d.hw07/.HW07$PrimeService (has extras) }: not found

When I call it without the HW07, I get the same error.

Any ideas? Here is my code:

I changed some code in PrimeService...now I am just trying to get my String from the Thread (within the same class). I got it to work before but it's not working this time.

Your Service must be a static class. Then once in your manifest, you will need to show it as so

<service android:name="HW07$PrimeService"/>

You could do something like this (pseudo)

class HM07 extends Activity {

    public static Handler mHandler;
    // ...

    @Override public void onCreate(Bundle icicle) {
        super.onCreate(icicle);
        // ...

        mHandler = new Handler();
    }
}

class PrimeService extends Service {
    @Override public void onStartCommand() {
        Handler handler = HM07.mHandler;
        handler.sendMessage(/* Message */);
    }
}

Ahh, a static class! That makes sense, but... When I declare it as a static class, I get the error: non-static variable handler cannot be referenced from a static context [javac] handler.sendMessage(handler.obtainMessage(0, result)); [javac] ^ Perhaps the inner class is not the way to go. I couldn't get the Activity and Service to communicate otherwise because the Handlers were associated with different threads (and therefore different messageQueues) and I could not get them to communicate. Any ideas what I can do here? –  jacky May 24 '12 at 20:50
    
Correct. It is generally not a good idea to have a static inner service because, more often that not, it doesn't make any sense. A service should be a self sufficient entity that is communed via a ServiceConnection. Using a Service connection, you will receive an instance of your service. Using this instance is how you can then "talk" back and forth. –  AedonEtLIRA May 24 '12 at 20:54
    
Unfortunately, this is for a class and we cannot use ServiceConnection because we have not learned about it! Is there a way to do this with just a Handler and Threads? –  jacky May 24 '12 at 20:57
    
I basically hand the code that I have in the inner class in PrimeService.java. I could not get the Handlers to communicate because they had two separate messageQueues! I know it must be doable but the only way I can think of is to send the Message using an Intent. That seems rather pointless though... Also, thank you for the help! –  jacky May 24 '12 at 21:00
    
Well, maybe I can just use ServiceConnection. It's better to use something that works and possibly lose a few points for that than to sit here trying to figure this out. THanks! –  jacky May 24 '12 at 21:11
