I am trying to reach this goal: save the state of the Silverlight app to the isolateduserstorage, in order to reload it on the next startup. I need to store a List ObservableCollection<UIElement>, the UIElements are created by a factory (actually I am creating Shapes there).

The problem is, that Serialization throws an exception (which you will find below). I have a clue what the problem might be (Serialization doesnt know how to store UIElements(?)), however, I don't know how to fix this issue.

UIElement doesn't support serialization, you will have to serialize it to XML as a string, save it to isolated storage or DB, deserialize it from XML back to the viewmodel.

Have you tried using Xaml serialization services? If you are de/serializing xaml content, it is best to use those instead of regular xml serialization. This blog post describes it all.
