I have a xpath query and I can get all the attribute and their respective values

but now I want to know these attribute belongs to which element?

this is my xml :

So you want to know the @id of the <node> for the <tag> you're analyzing? If that's all you're looking for, try ap.selectXPath("../@id") If it's something else, try adding a snippet of a before/after for xml you have posted. –  JWiley May 31 '12 at 12:32

How about vn.toElement(vn.PARENT)?

I have the same problem as well and I could not handle it (I am also working on OSM data)

I used a method but I think it is not efficient for large amount of datas like OSM

I am trying to get the nodes within ways and when I see the node , I try to get its parent id

        while (way_id_counter != -1)
        {
            start = System.currentTimeMillis();
            wayID = vn.toString(way_id_counter+1);
            apSubNode_id.resetXPath();
            apSubNode_id.selectXPath("//way[" + wayIndex +"]/nd/@ref");
            way_node_id_counter = apSubNode_id.evalXPath();

            while (way_node_id_counter != -1)
            {
                subNodeID = vn.toString(way_node_id_counter+1);
                //System.out.println("Sub node id is " + subNodeID);
                way_node_id_counter = apSubNode_id.evalXPath();
            }
            wayIndex++;
            way_id_counter = apWay_id.evalXPath();
            //System.out.println("Way id is " + wayID);
            //break;
            end = System.currentTimeMillis();
            System.out.println(end - start);
        }

It is nested (searching for ways first then for nodes within this way or tags within this way in your case but I did not find a good solution till now )
