I'm trying to write a Python script that reads the filename of my MP3s and when it finds a missing Artist tag it will take it from the first part of the filename. Most of my MP3s are titled "Artist - Title.mp3".

But none of the ID3 tag readers work very well in Python. ID3 won't read any tag past 1.1 and it hasn't been developed since 2002. Mutagen raises exceptions when a file is missing tags. Eye3D requires installing a binary to get the libraries to work, ditto with pylibid3.

Am I using the wrong language? I've heard that Perl has some great ID3 tag libraries. I'm a novice so switching languages (it's been a while since I've read a book on Perl) would mean starting over from scratch. But I'm willing to do it if Python is the wrong language.

Any thoughts?

Stay with Mutagen, it's currently the best ID3 library. I find it works exceptionally (hah) well, better than anything in Perl land, even the taglib bindings. Exceptions are nothing unusual with Python: catch them and continue as desired. –  daxim May 31 '12 at 15:44

It's easy enough to handle the exception with mutagen:

Didn't seem to work: I get this: mutagen.id3.ID3NoHeaderError: 'E:\<samplefile>.mp3' doesn't start with an ID3 tag –  Tensigh Jun 1 '12 at 0:23

Here's a Perl script that does what you want. I use this all the time. It even previews the changes before making them.

You do need to install a couple Perl modules (MP3::Info and MP4::Info), although you could remove the MP4 lines from the code and skip that module.

Thanks. I've installed Perl but I've poured all of my energy into Python. One of the reasons why I started doing this was to learn programming. I've seen so much good stuff in Perl it's definitely motivated me to pick up Perl as well. Thanks for the script. –  Tensigh Jun 1 '12 at 0:11
