I'm writing a text editor in gtk+ 2.0 and gtksourceview 2.0 as way to learn C. I'm getting a segfault when I try to open a file, which happens to reside on an sshfs. This isn't always a problem, so I don't know if the sshfs has anything to do with it.

Here is a block of code from my open function:

I'm at that point in my learning where I know that I really need to understand better memory management and pointers. Any ideas as to what might be causing this segfault? Or any ideas of how to troubleshoot further? Thanks.

Can you expand upon the entire notebookPages and paths variables and folderFromPath() function? Those feel iffy but without seeing them, it's hard to tell if they are really the source of the problems. –  sarnold Jun 4 '12 at 23:21

This line is very dangerous: strcpy(str,path);

If the length of path large than the length of str[], may cause write over array boundary and other unwanted result.

Please use strncpy instead of strcpy or make sure source string is small than or equal to destination string.

thank you for the information. I was not aware of the potential problems caused by strcpy(). Although when I ran valgrind on this program, I had a hard time sorting through the output, but I did see lots of references to strcpy(). I have 30 instances of this function throughout this program. I bet that accounts for much of the instability I have been witnessing. I also remember the path I was trying to open. I went back and calculated the len. It was 91, which is greater than the 80 alloted for array str. Thanks again. –  nomadicME Jun 5 '12 at 17:57
