I have a query that basically combines tables of actions and selects from them in chronological order while preserving pagination..

Is there a more efficient / better way to do this? The query takes 3 seconds. Not terrible.. but I think there is room for improvement and I will be using it alot..

Have you used EXPLAIN to see what is going on? Make sure that you have the correct indexes to ensure good performance. – Ed Heal Jun 8 '12 at 6:23

+1 for indexes. I've had queries go from 30 sec to 0.03 sec by changing index. – danneth Jun 8 '12 at 7:23

Should each column that gets joined on be indexed then? If indexes doesn't fix it (I believe it will) I will post Explain info. Thanks! – Ryan Thompson Jun 10 '12 at 18:38

What you need is indexes that the query can use. A compound index on (newsletter_id, subscribe_id) on each one of the three tables would help.

You can also rewrite the query like this:
