I have some (malformed DITA) XML in the following format:

<dl>
<dlentry><dt>BLARG</dt>
<dd>BLARG Definition</dd>
<dt>BLARG2</dt>
<dd>BLARG2 Definition</dd></dlentry>
</dl>
<dl>
<dlentry><dt>BLARG3</dt>
<dd>BLARG3 Definition</dd></dlentry>
</dl>
<p>Continuation of BLARG3 definition.</p>
<note>Note pertaining to BLARG3 definition</note>

and so on.

What I am trying to do is consolidate this series of <dl> elements into a single <dl>, which would look like this:

<dl>
    <dlentry><dt>BLARG</dt>
       <dd>BLARG Definition</dd></dlentry>
    <dlentry><dt>BLARG2</dt>
       <dd>BLARG2 Definition</dd></dlentry>
    <dlentry><dt>BLARG3</dt>
       <dd>BLARG3 definition. Continuation of BLARG3 definition.
       <note>Note pertaining to BLARG3 definition</note></dd></dlentry>
<dl>

I am trying to use keys to index any <p> or <note> nodes according to the generate-id() value of the preceding <dd>, like this:

I intentionally haven't generated the ". " delimiter between the two text nodes, as this hasn't been stated as requirement and may be just a decoration by the OP. Doing this requires a minor additional effort and is left as exercise for the reader :).

empo: I ran your transformation on the provided XML fragment (wrapped into a single top element) and the results are quite different from what the OP has specified as wanted results. Have you really tested it? –  Dimitre Novatchev Jun 14 '12 at 2:19
    
I always test my solutions, but sometime I misunderstand questions :). Yes, there was an error were dd tag did not wrap p or noteor table. Now it's ok. –  empo Jun 14 '12 at 4:10
    
@mryeti Do note that I've left ptag inside dd as well (just a bit different from wanted output). But this is DITA 1.0 conformant. docs.oasis-open.org/dita/v1.0/langspec/dd.html –  empo Jun 14 '12 at 4:13
