how do i store the values after :- in elements of an array?

i know this code :

for line in lines:
    items = line.split()[1:]
    items = [item.split(':')[0] for item in items]
    items = map(int,items)
    rows.append(items)

stores the ones before :.

Why are you using map? You should use a list comprehension to apply int as well. –  ecatmur Jun 14 '12 at 10:00

Change [0] to [1] on the 3rd line. That will get the second element from the spilt instead of the first.

Also, because the second numbers are not integers, the map(int, items) will fail. You probably want to use float. Here is a complete python script you can run as a test

Use the re module!

r=re.findall(r":-[0-9]{1,3}.[0-9]{1,5}", data)
for i in xrange(len(r)):
    r[i]=r[i].lstrip(":")
array=np.array(r).astype(float)

If all your values are negative you can simplify the code by deleting both, the : in the re.findall statement and the following for loop. Output:

array([ -29.9396,  -32.0895,  -35.6787,  -36.8527,  -37.3622,  -38.0584,
    -38.5265,  -38.7567,  -38.7663,  -39.1036,  -39.5838,  -40.653 ,

Pattern [0-9] can be replaced by \d: IMHO, it eases readability. –  Emmanuel Jun 25 '12 at 11:43

If

items = [item.split(':')[0] for item in items]

stores the values before :, then

items = [item.split(':')[1] for item in items]

stores the values after :.
