I need help in creating a suitable network protocol for an iOS collaboration app. This app should be able to share and annotate PDFs, and should be able to present annotations to those connected to the collaboration session in real time. A couple of basic functionalities that should be supported by the protocol are:

  1. Transfer files (less than 5MB) as fast as possible to multiple clients (less than 50).
  2. Relay small amounts of data (in the byte-size range) such as coordinates or positions to all clients in realtime.
  3. Should be scalable, i.e. not limited to the local network, and efficient in a wireless environment.

So far I have written three separate and independent prototypes:

  1. A multicasting protocol for use with point data transfer to multiple clients.
  2. A type of "chained" protocol for file transfer to multiple clients, explained in the following paragraphs.
  3. A typical server-client protocol, where a seperate thread on the server handles each client that connects to it. This is for transferring both files and point data.

The protocol in #2 works like a linked list. A simple model goes like this: Initially, let's say you have a server (head) with no clients (nodes). If a node connects to the head, it becomes node A, and the head starts serving it. If another node (node B) tries connects to the head, the head tells this node B to connect to node A, since the head is busy serving node A. Node B then connects to node A, and node A starts serving the part of the file it already recieved from the head. This process repeats as more nodes connect to the head, essentially creating a chain of nodes (client-servers). Basically, data is passed down the client chain by relaying data from the head.

Protocol #3 was implemented using GCDAsyncSocket, which is a high-level wrapper for BSD sockets.

Protocol #1 and #2 were implemented using BSD sockets directly.

Sooooooo, my questions are:

  1. What better ways are there to implement protocols satisfying the above requirements?
  2. Are there any existing libraries that implement such a protocol? Where can the libraries be found?
  3. I was thinking that my protocols work in a way similar to that of multiplayer online game network protocols. Are there iOS libraries fit for this kind of functionality?

Just curious, do your implementation of prototypes 1 & 2 satisfied the requirement for 3 (scalable)? –  user523234 Jun 17 '12 at 11:02
    
Actually, prototype 1 does not satify requirement 3...which was the reason why I implemented prototype 3. Prototype 2 should theoretically work over the internet, but I haven't tested it yet in that environment. –  rb3 Jun 17 '12 at 23:17
