Quick background: I'm developing drivers for our hardware compression engine. One driver handles the PCI interactions, many thousands of 32K packets per second. That driver is working solidly. Now I'm working on a character driver and that's looking pretty good, my test app is running hundreds of threads without issues - for a while. Then after 30 minutes or maybe a few hours, I get this "scheduling while atomic" BUG in read() or write() - in copy_to_user() or copy_from_user(). If I were holding any spinlocks, I'd know how to fix the problem. But I'm not. Nor am I in interrupt context. This is the standard read() or write() path from the OS.

I even checked preempt_count() just before calling copy_*_user() and it showed zero every time, yet the BUG says that preempt_count() is 0x00000102 or 0x00000100 when it reaches copy_user_generic_string(). I know the 0x100 is the softirq count << 8. But I'm not sure how that's happening.

I went over my interrupt and tasklet code in the PCI driver very carefully. The tasklet does use a spinlock but the code path has no branch points between the lock and unlock. And as I said, the PCI driver has been working solidly for months, providing compression services to another kernel module we developed.

This is happening on two different machines under the 3.2 kernel:

It seems that you have an exception while running copy_user_generic_string somewhere inside _write functions of altra_gzip module. Check out this path. –  Ilya Matveychikov Jun 21 '12 at 18:46
    
Thanks. Yes, the exception is happening in my _write function. It also happens in my _read function when it calls copy_user_generic_string. What makes this so puzzling is that neither of those functions hold spinlocks. –  tom biggs Jun 22 '12 at 11:49

Check out comment in schedule_bug. I don't see your code and I can be wrong while suggesting that you can have a race between exit and write in your flex application. –  Ilya Matveychikov Jun 22 '12 at 12:12
