Is there a PHP function to convert named HTML entities into their respective numeric HTML entities?

For example:

$str = "Oggi è un bel giorno";
echo entities_to_unicode($str); // Oggi è un bel giorno

You are not asking for Unicode but for numeric HTML entities. –  hakre Jun 24 '12 at 17:23

Even your first answer worked for us, since our only need was to properly render an RSS feed. Strangely, html_entity_decode($str) without additional parameters didn't worked as expected: a replacement character (�) appeared instead of html entities. @Prophet: That's because the "answer" offered here is not encoding aware and is not compatible with Unicode, nor does it specify which Unicode encoding it aims to support (as far as I can see, it does not support any unicode encoding). –  hakre Jun 24 '12 at 17:36

This solution is based on the code from php.net:

You are looking for a simple translation function from named HTML entities to their numeric counterpart.

This can be done by using a translation table (that is an array) and the string translation function (strtr):

$translated = strtr($string, $HTML401NamedToNumeric);

This works for $string being UTF-8 encoded or of a single-byte character set.

Example array for the HTML 4.01 named entities as specified by W3C as used above follows. It contains 252 entities. If you want to support XHTML, then there is one more (I put it at the end):

What is a minor miracle is that php has no a function or suitable parameter for existing function for this. PHP has over 3000 (or 4000) functions! Why echo htmlentities("ä") returns ä? Why not ä? Readability? No really, ä is more readable than ä or ä. –  Timo Mar 11 '13 at 18:16

No, although it may have critical in some cases (maybe some mobile-things). I'm thinking of code speed and code amount. First use html_entity_decode to get the unencoded version of your source code. If necessary, set the third parameter (encoding) to the proper value.

Then use utf8_encode on that source code.

$source_code_without_entities = html_entity_decode($source_code_with_entities);
$utf8_source_code = utf8_encode($source_code_without_entities);
