I'm new to C programming. I want to create C program which can read XML file using libxml2. I tested this code:

This is the XML that I want to read:

Unfortunately I get this error when I run the example:

[rcbandit@Laptop Ctest]$ ./test xmlfile.xml
module: NetworkModule
module: MonitoringModule
module: OracleModule
module: DataFilterModule
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
[user@Laptop Ctest]$ 

When I remove this line the code works:

cur = cur->xmlChildrenNode;

    // This loop iterates through the elements that are children of "root"
    while (cur != NULL) {
        if ((!xmlStrcmp(cur->name, (const xmlChar *) "system-modules"))) {
            parseSystemModules(doc, cur);
        }
        cur = cur->next;
    }

Can you help me to fix this problem?

Problem is here:

while (cur != NULL) {
    if ((!xmlStrcmp(cur->name, (const xmlChar *) "system-modules"))) {
        parseSystemModules(doc, cur);
    }
    cur = cur->next;
}


cur = cur->xmlChildrenNode;

The while exits when cur is NULL & dereference it next statement viz. cur = cur->xmlChildrenNode; thus the crash in cur->xmlChildrenNode.
Maybe you can try to do the comparisons in the single loop maybe on these lines:

while (cur != NULL) {
    if ((!xmlStrcmp(cur->name, (const xmlChar *) "system-modules"))) {
        parseSystemModules(doc, cur);
    }
    else if ((!xmlStrcmp(cur->name, (const xmlChar *) "system-configuration"))) {
        parseSystemConfiguration(doc, cur);
    }
    cur = cur->next;
}

The second proposal is working. But is there more elegant way to write the parseSystemProperties. I would like to add more XML sub elements. –  user1285928 Jun 27 '12 at 14:49
    
Where would you like to add sub elements to? system-properties? The above solution works because system-properties has 2 children nodes system-module & system-configuration. There is no need to get next child node from root i.e. sibling of system-properties. If you add more node @ the level of system-configuration & system-module i.e. children of system-properties you will need to add more if - else - if ... for them as well (or maybe a more elegant way to handle). If you add at the level of system-properties then you will need to make the call to get next child node –  another.anon.coward Jun 27 '12 at 15:01

Try:

cur = (cur) ? cur->xmlChildrenNode : NULL;

You could also add this to the loop logic:

for(cur = (cur) ? cur->xmlChildrenNode: NULL; cur; cur = cur->next) {
// This loop iterates through the elements that are children of "root"  
    if ((!xmlStrcmp(cur->name, (const xmlChar *) "system-modules"))) {
        parseSystemModules(doc, cur);
    }

I tested it but there is no positive result. Maybe the solution is to split the function parseSystemProperties into two small functions. –  user1285928 Jun 27 '12 at 14:34
    
You use the same cur variable twice, without reinitialisation. At the end of the first loop it will always be NULL. –  wildplasser Jun 27 '12 at 14:39
