I'm working with OpenGL and coding with C on my Windows computer, and I'm trying to get a really, really basic collision detection going on. Right now, I'm trying this to see if a point Ox,Oz is inside of two boxes:

I've also tried variations, like having nothing pass through to the function, putting the loop outside the function, etc. The problem seems to be with equality check?

At the very lowest level of what I'm trying to do is to see if a point (the camera) is within a boundary (which is a set of 4 points kept in a 2D array), and if it is in -any- of the boundaries listed, return 1. If the point is NOT in any of the boundaries, return 0.

When this does work, it only does it for one area, IE if I move over to the first listed bounded area, it returns properly, but the second area doesn't return properly.

Are these boxes aligned to the X and Y axis? –  airza Jun 28 '12 at 19:55
    
They're aligned to the X and Z axis, technically, but since I'm not doing the detection in 3D I think of it as X and Y. –  Aska Ray Jun 28 '12 at 19:58
    
I'm trying to understand the multidimensional array setup you have and not really able to figure out what's going on - particularly Ox and Oz. I wrote some code like this in JS but it looks different, of course- the naming scheme for the array and the function of those is tripping me up. –  airza Jun 28 '12 at 20:08
    
It's set up like: box[i][j]. i is the number of areas that I want to be 'bounded off'; j is the coords for the specific box. For example, colbox[0] = {3,3,6,6}, the first two is the lower-left coord and the last two are the upper-right coord, in a 2D plane (which i call x/y for simplicity's sake) –  Aska Ray Jun 28 '12 at 20:12
    
Sorry.. Ox and Oz are the coords for the camera. Think of Ox as the x-coord and Oz as the y-coord for the point that I want to check if it's inside one of the predetermined boxes. –  Aska Ray Jun 28 '12 at 20:14

I think when you have i=1 the second line

if ((colbox[i+1][0] < Ox) && (Ox < colbox[i+1][2])&& (colbox[i+1][1] < Oz) && (colbox[i+1][3] > Oz))

walks off of the array of size 2. (Since the max index for this is 1.)

So, given that it's reading memory that's not inside the array (Which I think is generally ok) you will find that condition probably fails a lot, maybe even most of the time since it's working with essentially random data. So it then returns 0.

Aha.. I forgot I put that there, even. Thank you for pointing that out! I think I originally put it there because when looking at the printf, it wasn't even iterating through to the second entry...let me tweak this and see what happens. –  Aska Ray Jun 28 '12 at 20:25
