# Java Sort algorithm String with Number

I have a List of Strings. EXAMPLE_1, EXAMPLE_2, EXAMPLE_3 ... EXAMPLE_99 What is the best algorithm for sorting here?

Is it possible with a Collator? This is my current procedure, but I guess there could be a better way:

Your code will fail if `getIdNo()` returns null for `o`. –  JB Nizet Jun 29 '12 at 7:12
right, thanks for this addition. But I need a better way for comparing this. try/catch doesn't seem to be a good way... –  dtrunk Jun 29 '12 at 7:18
I don't really see any other way. You could use a regexp to extract the numerical part, but in the end, you'll need to use parseInt(), and handle the exception (even if it never happens) –  JB Nizet Jun 29 '12 at 7:22

@pavi that would be right if target strings would be like "Example_XX" where XX is 01,02,03,..99. At fact "EXAMPLE_2" is less then "EXAMPLE_20". Can you have two decimals strings? –  Viktor Stolbin Jun 29 '12 at 7:31

To build on @Jeshuruns answer, you could skip all the number parsing like this:
