I've been experimenting with D3 and maps. All the examples and tutorials I've seen so far build the SVG from a GeoJSON and add the data. But I've got a SVG map already in the html and want to add data to the paths with D3 (and be able to switch between datasets but thats the next hurdle).

I've added ids to the paths but can't find a way to use the key-function to match the ids of the paths with the ids in my data.

Here is my question: Is this kind of matching at all possible and how? Or should I use the GeoJSON route?

Yes, you can bind data to specific existing elements by supplying a key function to selection.data. Specifically, note this comment from the API reference:

When the key function is evaluated on new data elements, the this context is the data array; when the key function is evaluated on the existing selection, the this context is the associated DOM element.

So, you need to define a key function that can return the appropriate identifier from data (d) or from the element (this). Here's one example:

function key(d) {
  return d ? d.provincie : this.id;
}

Or, to combine it with your data-join:

svg.selectAll(".provincies path")
    .data(mapdata, function(d) { return d ? d.provincie : this.id; })
    …

I don't quite understand the key function. The way I read it, if there is no data-element then the id of the path is used. Is that necessary to join the data, since there would be no corresponding array element and a join would not be necessary? Does the data function cycle through the data array or through the selected paths? Just trying to wrap my head around it, to better understand D3. –  user1492600 Jun 30 '12 at 20:47
    
The data function iterates over both the data and the elements, applying the key function to each. When the key for a datum and an element matches, the data is bound to the element and put in the update selection. Leftover data is put in the enter selection, and leftover elements are put in the exit selection. –  mbostock Jul 1 '12 at 14:33
    
Thanks, Mike. I tried the different selections by removing a provincie name from the array and adding an unknown one. As expected, one path was put in the exit-selection. I assigned a nodata class to show it. The new province was visualized by adding a circle for the elements in the enter-selection. It works but I still don't understand HOW the key function works. Why compare with d.provincie if there is data and otherwise with this.id? I just feel I'm missing something that might be obvious to you. –  user1492600 Jul 2 '12 at 19:58
    
Because in one case you have data (d) and in the other case all you have is an element (this). To control how data is bound to elements, you need two ways of deriving a key: one from data, and one from an element. The same function is used for both. –  mbostock Jul 3 '12 at 0:29
