I have a web app in SharePoint 2010 whose Authentication mode is Windows. I have extended the web app (Zone:Intranet) where Forms Based Authentication is used. I have created a sample C# Console application to add the forms based user to the site and it adds the users successfully.

The method:

But when the same method is exposed in WCF service (hosted as windows service), and when the client calls this method, it could not add the user. It throws following exception:

The user does not exist or is not unique.

The SharePoint logs is:

You should probably look at doing EnsureUser instead of adding each time that method is called. That being said, your error you show looks to be more of a configuration error. Ensure your web.config in STS has the appropriate connection strings. – Jaime Torres Jul 5 '12 at 14:09
Thanks Torres. I have re-checked my web.config but still the code does not work in web service. I wonder why the same code works in console app and not works in web service. – Prakash Jul 10 '12 at 5:45
Another possible thought: perhaps the user that your service is running as does not have permission to open socket/connect to your SQL server? – Jaime Torres Jul 10 '12 at 11:58
