Running the code bellow, I'm getting this error:

AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'book_number'

Since I'm putting this initial row in the bd Contract (as sugested here and others similar questions):

first_query = db.GqlQuery("SELECT * FROM Contract ORDER BY date DESC")
                if first_query is None: # Puting something in db if it's empty
                    first_record = Contract(book_number = 1, initial_page = 1, final_page = 1)
                    first_record.put()

I also make a test to verify if the query is returning none:

first_query = db.GqlQuery("SELECT * FROM Contract ORDER BY date DESC")

    else:

When I print this: q = db.GqlQuery("SELECT * FROM Contract ORDER BY date DESC")

I get this:

When I print this:

contract = q.get()

I get None

How to fix that making put() work?

Try this:

first_query = db.GqlQuery("SELECT * FROM Contract ORDER BY date DESC").get()

You have to use get() to select the last record (and not the query object). So, the code will run inside the if block.

May be because the query is returning nothing, try this :

q = db.GqlQuery("SELECT * FROM Contract ORDER BY date DESC")
contract = q.get() # return only the first entity
if contract is not None:
    numBook = contract.book_number
else:
    print('contract is None')

In addition to checking that you have got a result form the query, have you confirmed that you have any records in the datastore to actually retrieve? –  Tim Hoffman Jul 6 '12 at 3:23
    
I made this test (if is None, put something into db) but the error persist: first_query = db.GqlQuery("SELECT * FROM Contract ORDER BY date DESC") if first_query is None: first_record = Contract(book_number = 1, initial_page = 1, final_page = 1) first_record.put() –  craftApprentice Jul 6 '12 at 3:50
    
but is that code run. Check via the /admin page and look in the datastore viewer to see if you have records. Also if you have the check on the q.get() for None and you are still getting AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'book_number' then you aren't doing the check correctly. Update you code here. As the error says None object has no attribute 'book_number' –  Tim Hoffman Jul 6 '12 at 4:00
    
first_query = db.GqlQuery("SELECT * FROM Contract ORDER BY date DESC") will return a query object. You need to read the docs and then you will see the db.GqlQuery creates a query object, you then need to call run(), get() or fetch(). So you add of a record never runs –  Tim Hoffman Jul 6 '12 at 5:11
