I'm building a huffman coding program and when I try and run the code I have so far it just gives me a warning that the freq map object .begin() doesn't exist.

You've posted so much code I can't even see the for_each call! Any chance of posting an SSCCE that exhibits the problem? Unrelated - vector<T*> is almost always a bad idea. Consider using vector<unique_ptr<T>> or boost::ptr_vector<T> instead. –  Praetorian Jul 6 '12 at 20:09
