I have an custom AdapterView that i extended, which hosts RelativeLayouts which in turn contain Gallery views which display data. That data needs to be replaced for each item in the parent adapter view.
In the implementation for the adapter class for the parent AdapterView,
I need to change the adapter of the nested Gallery in the getView() method, when I get a recycled convertView argument (Each item in the parent adapterview corresponds to a different data set to be displayed in the nested gallery views).

This code attempts to internally change the data set within the adapter itself. Let's say the previous dataset had 3 items in it, and the new one has 1, it will update the first view in the dataset, but will leave the extra views (which it should get rid of) in their place. The extra unnecessary views cannot be scrolled to (the gallery behaves as if it has only 1 view in it when in practice it doesn't).

I've also just tried to actually set the adapter to the SAME adapter, and still the gallery disappears: gallery.setAdapter(gallery.getAdapter)); –  saarraz1 Jul 8 '12 at 13:29

You must create a new CollectionGalleryAdapter in the else part. not a new Gallery.. I recommend simplifying/breaking your layout into different screens coz current design will someday make your app slow... Check the log and see if it gives any hints.. –  userSeven7s Jul 10 '12 at 18:29

Since calling notifyDataSetInvalidated() and notifyDataSetChanged() do not fix the issue, the problem seems to be in your StreamView custom adapter view class.

First of all, use view holder. This will let you avoid this strange part of code:

for (int i = layout.getChildCount() - 1; i >= 0; i--) {
     View child = layout.getChildAt(i);
     if (child instanceof Gallery) {
          hlv = (Gallery) child;
          break;
     }
}

By the way, why do you use such an odd approach to find a View?

hlv = (Gallery)layout.findViewById(android.R.id.list) would be enough.

Second, you shouldn't create new Gallery hlv = new Gallery(mContext), then initialize it and add it to your layout. This is inefficient and error-prone.

You need to reuse already present Gallery, which you again can get with hlv = (Gallery)layout.findViewById(android.R.id.list) or (better) by simply accessing the field of your view holder object.

Thank you for your response, didn't know about the ViewHolder method. I used the strange approach to attempt removing the view by index. As I later saw, removing the view and adding another one didn't prove to be helpful, so I'll update the code in the question to another approach. –  saarraz1 Jul 11 '12 at 8:42
