Spring Async doesn't work

Question

We have an application written in spring 3.0. I noticed that the @Async does not work. I searched around and noticed that I need to add

<task:annotation-driven executor="myExecutor" scheduler="myScheduler"/>
<task:executor id="myExecutor" pool-size="5"/>
<task:scheduler id="myScheduler" pool-size="10"/>

But when I do that I get an exception.

For @Async to work (I'm assuming annotation-based config), you need to do 2 things:

1. <task:annotation-driven/> in your config
2. Public method annotated with @Async

...and that's about it.

Your exception doesn't indicate that @Async doesn't work. It indicates that there is an autowiring issue with field HomepageSrvImpl.

This is and old question but since it does not have and accepted answer so far, here we go.

The essence of the problem is how the @Async mechanism works. The hint for what is happening is this part of the stacktrace, specifically what is marked with bold:

Caused by: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Can not set package.srv.homepage.impl.HomepageSrvImpl field package.mvc.controller.browser.LocationBrowserController.homepageSrvImpl to $Proxy24

What is happening is that, in order to be able to intercept the invocation of the method marked with @Async, Spring needs to create a Proxy for it.

As pointed out by user "El Guapo" in another answer, you are probably declaring the type of the autowired attribute, not by using an interface, but using the actual implementation. (note that the error in the stackTrace does not specifically point to the object being proxied, but to the object that needs to have it autowired as an attribute, but it still points your troubleshooting in the right direction).

This works OK until you start using the @Async annotation, because that forces sprint to create the proxy and failing to autowire it.

I haven't tested it, but I'm assuming this would happen with any other aspects Spring needs to interlace your code with (for example @Transactional).

I had this same problem... I have a bunch of difference "IMPLS" that implement an Interface that I am trying to autowire, the problem was that I was autowiring the implementation and not the interface... as soon as I started autowiring the interface (with a @Qaulifier) everything works A-OK!!!!

This section from stack trace indicates what the error is. The field homepageSrvImpl should be of the interface type not the concrete class. If you can't figure out add the definition of LocationBrowserController and HomepageSrvImpl - just the class & autowired sections.

I also head the same problem.

Adding the attribute proxy-target-class="true" to <task:annotation-driven/> fixed it for me. My definition looks like that now:

<task:annotation-driven 
   executor="myExecuter" scheduler="myScheduler" proxy-target-class="true"/>

That solved the problem in my case (using Spring 3.1.1). See Using @Transaction annotation with @Autowired - Spring for explanation.
