I wrote a c++ program using simple techniques (with a lot of help from the community here), and now I've been trying to brush up on some more advanced c++ techniques. I already see the opportunity for dynamic memory with the 'words' array and some of the others. What other parts of the program should I change to use better/more advanced programming techniques?

This is too much code for stackoverflow - you should post it on code reviews. However I'll note two things: You use globals which should generally be avoided, and secondly this is C code that happens to use cin and cout. –  Mark B Jul 11 '12 at 18:38

I was going to say the same thing. You're not using any C++ feature here, except for the streams and the boolean type. No classes, no templates, no STL containers, no overloading, etc. –  netcoder Jul 11 '12 at 18:40

while (wordlist.good()) { getline (wordlist,line); should be combined into while (getline (wordlist, line)). There's one thing different from what's been said, but I imagine there are many more. –  chris Jul 11 '12 at 18:43

Since this is C++, the first think I think you need to look into is breaking away from a C-like paradigm of global variables and functions to an OOP (object-oriented programming) structure to your program using class types. In other words you need to work on defining an object interface that provides data-encapsulation. This means the methods of the object create an abstracted front-end for the users of your object, hiding the actual implementation details of the object itself, including its data-members. In addition, and specifically with C++, you should look into RAII (resource acquisition is initialization) in order to prevent initialization bugs at object creation time as well as properly cleaning up the resources of objects at their destruction points.
