I'm tryin to a graph in R covering the gold price movement for a 6 month period from December 2011 to June 2012 using 5 minute price observations, meaning I have 5913 observations I try modifying the x-axis to have dates labelled at the bottom as follows:

  rt = dat$mid
    x11()
    plot(rt, type="l", col="blue", main="Gold Price", xlab="TBC", 
ylab="Price", ylim=range(rt), xaxt="n")

axis(1, at=1:7, lab=c("Dec '11", "Jan '12", 
    "Feb '12", "Mar '12", "Apr '12", "May '12", "June '12"))

but this returns no axis at all.

The default axis ranged: 0 1000 2000 3000 4000 5000 6000

I tried also changing at to at=1:6000 but this is no help. Can anyone advise me of how to achieve this? Thanks

I should add I have searched far and wide for information how to do this but I seem to be able to find everything on axes except this.

If you call plot with plot(dates,values) then you should get the X-axis labelled as the date (if your 'dates' are one of the date/time classes). –  Spacedman Jul 16 '12 at 10:04
    
5913*15 minutes = 88695 minutes = 61 days which is only about two months... If you can't get that basic maths right, I wouldn't trust you with gold :) –  Spacedman Jul 16 '12 at 10:14
    
Hi I'm not sure if they are. I'm a novice with R. It's dat = read.csv("gold.csv", as.is=TRUE), then the next part was done for me but it's tim = strptime(dat[,1], "%d/%m/%Y %H:%M"); dat$day = format(tim, "%Y-%m-%d");. From what I understand I think it's creates a date/time class object but I am not sure. –  number8 Jul 16 '12 at 10:27

If its every five minutes then it should be three times as many as the 20449 I calculated - nearer 60,000 than 6,000.... –  Spacedman Jul 16 '12 at 10:31

Here's an expansion on my comment. I'll make some fake data and plot it:

> t = seq(as.Date("2011-11-1"),as.Date("2012-06-1"),by=as.difftime("0:15:00"))
> length(t)
[1] 20449
> v = rnorm(length(t))
> plot(t,v)
> plot(t,v,type="l")

And my x-axis is nicely labelled with dates. And I get 20,449 15-minute intervals...

From your data file (I had to add some commas because I think the tab separators got lost and you've got row numbers):

> gold=read.csv("gold.csv",sep=",",as.is=TRUE)
> gold$Tim = strptime(gold$Date, "%d/%m/%Y %H:%M")

Now summary(gold) tells me that "returns" is character, because of that annoying NA at the start. Let's fix that:

> gold$returns=as.numeric(gold$returns)

Then simply:

> plot(gold$Tim,gold$returns,type="l")

You might want to investigate the packages for time series data, such as zoo, or xts, or read the time series or financial Task Views linked from the R web pages...

Actually I'm guessing that you are getting an x-axis: it's just too short to read (ie. just labels the first seven points).

When you change at to 1:6000 you should get an error message like "Error in axis(...): 'at' and 'labels' lengths differ 5913 != 7"

Try something like axis(blahblah, at = floor(seq(from = 1, to = 5913, length.out = 7)), blahblah)

If it matters you should tweak the parameters in the seq function to make sure that the ticks are really where you expect them to be.

Hey thanks I tried this but it just returns Dec then May with 7 small ticks in between and then nothing else. Sorry but my knowledge is very limited. –  number8 Jul 16 '12 at 10:22
    
Umm, the full specification is axis(1, at=floor(seq(from = 1, to = 5913, length.out = 7)), lab=c("Dec '11", "Jan '12", "Feb '12", "Mar '12", "Apr '12", "May '12", "June '12")) - which seems to work (I still like Spacedman's solution better....) –  R-noob Jul 16 '12 at 10:31
