I produced a diff.txt file with the command (executed from ~):

diff -r /full/path/to/directory/A /full/path/to/directory/B > diff.txt

The generated diff file looks good.

Now I run (always from ~)

patch -p0 <diff.txt

or I also tried:

patch <diff.txt

I would expect it to apply the changes to the files in /full/path/to/directory/A so that after the operation they will be identical to those in /full/path/to/directory/B

But it only says: * Only garbage was found in the patch input.

What am I missing?

I've figured out I was missing the -n (normal) flag. Now with: patch -n -p0 <diff.txt I get the error message: Can't find file to patch at input line 2. The file is right there at the specified path. What am I missing now? –  matteo Jul 17 '12 at 22:50

@amon I've edited the question and added it. As I mentioned, after adding the -n flag it no longer says the input is all garbage, but it says it cannot find the files to patch, while the paths in the diff file are correct. The absolute paths are correct and I use -p0. When it complains it cannot find the file to patch and asks me the file name, I copy and paste the very same path it's complaining about, and it works fine –  matteo Jul 18 '12 at 21:46

Generate the diff using "diff -ruN path1 path2", apply the patch using "patch -p{N} < patchfile", where N determines the prefix of the path to strip from the files in the diff. Just look at the patch & analyze the "diff" lines to see what should be stripped off. (See: man patch) . Before applying the patch, do use "patch --dry-run -p0 < patchfile" to make sure everything will be at least reasonably sane.

Edit: Note the different contents of a patch generated using normal diff, unified diff (-u) and context diff (-c), and you'll see that the filename simply isn't included in 'normal' diff. The "diff" command is there, but the filename to patch is not. (Note also that the actual 'diff' output varies a bit from platform to platform, program to program, and patch has to do a little bit of interpolation to determine the patch format, and even tries to guess if you've given it the wrong options).

could you please have a look at my first two comments to my question? Suppose I could not regenerate the diff file with different parameters. Note that with patch -n it no more complains about "only garbage" but it says it can't find the file to patch. I want to understand why –  matteo Jul 31 '12 at 20:27

'normal' diffs (running diff without -u (unified) or -c (context)) aren't expected to have filenames identifying the files to be patched. So, a "normal" diff would work for a single file, but not a recursive (-r) diff. You simply have to generate the patch file "correctly", that's why it's not working. If (hypothetically) you couldn't regenerate the patch, you would either have to massage the patch into a unified diff format (I don't know of a tool to do this), or write a wrapper script (e.g., one that uses "expect") to feed patch the correct filenames. –  michael_n Aug 3 '12 at 1:19
    
actually the normal diff generated with "diff -r" (no other params) does contain filenames... patch just doesn't seem to know how to read them, though reading through "man patch" it looks like it should... –  matteo Aug 3 '12 at 11:34

@matteo - yes and no... the output of diff contains the original diff command, as do all diff formats. Using "-c" or "-u" does print additional filename info required by patch. You could argue that patch should be able to parse this for the filenames, but, in any case, it doesn't. –  michael_n Aug 9 '12 at 4:18
    
yes I thought it was supposed to be able to parse that: I had read the man page where it describes how it tries to "euristically" extract filenames from the first line of "garbage" and it seemed to me that the diff command with the file name would fit, but I guess I missed some detail. I had this problem when doing:

patch <file_patch> <file_destination>

instead of:

patch <file_destination> <file_patch>
