I have a piece of code with a tree viewer as part of an eclipse plugin. The code is here (this is directly taken from the eclipse PDE sample tree view):

I want to somehow be able to individually go through all the nodes on the tree and control the way they are expanded or collapsed. Basically I just want to know how to be able to iterate through all the nodes on the tree to adjust settings individually.

This should be a simple problem but I haven't seemed to find anything that works... I'm trying to figure out how exactly getItem() for TreeViewer objects works. But then the problem is even if I get the item, I can't (or am not sure about how to) modify it.

First get the underlying tree from the viewer:

Tree tree = viewer.getTree();

Then get the first level items in the tree:

TreeItem[] item = tree.getItems();

Any tree item can answer all of its direct children:

TreeItem[] item = aTreeItem.getItems();

And once you get a tree item, you can expand or collapse it:

aTreeItem.setExpanded(true);

So the access to all of the tree items would have to be recursive.

Thank you for this answer! Is there any way using this method that I can get the underlying object it represents (in my sample code case, the TreeObjects)? I ask this because I need to identify and treat each node differently depending on the internal states of the objects they represent. –  Matt Jul 19 '12 at 20:45
    
I believe you can use the getData() method on the TreeItem to get the associated tree object. I also believe that that association is automatically made for you. –  Chris Gerken Jul 19 '12 at 21:20
