I have to iterate through a log file and count the occurrence of each keyword. keywords are NAME, WORD, GOLD and SACK but there are Dependencies:

one NAME can have multiple occurences of WORD, GOLD, SACK

How do i store it and increase count? (hash,arrays,lists,tables,class)[no databases]

after parsing unique n's shud come wit count and other keywords count should result in { n1(2),w1(2),g1(1)|g2(1),s1(2)

i have tried this so far

hashmap name;
hashmap word;
hashmap gold;
hashmap sacks

i put the above data structures in a list is there a better way to handle data

In the light of Joel's recent blog post, an attempt to convert this question in an answerable question. Note: this is not an answer, but way too long to post in the comment. Can be deleted afterwards.

The major problem with this question is that it doesn't show much effort and is totally unclear on what exactly the problem is. As far as I understood it you want

  1. Loop over a log file which contains a number of elements with a certain structure
  2. Find all those elements in the log file
  3. Parse the content of each of those elements
  4. Find an appropriate Java object to contain that element
  5. Keep track of the number of those elements, and group them by an identifier (the name)

These are a lot of requirements, and from the question we have no idea how far you got and in which step you encountered a problem.

So clarify to which point you got it working and in which area you have a problem. Then post the relevant code for that problem, and we can take a look at it

@user1545477 No since the question is closed. And even after your edit, you only show an attempt where you declare some hashmaps. I still do not know whether you are simply looking for the best data structure or whether you fail in parsing the file, ... –  Robin Jul 23 '12 at 10:54

@user1545477 That you wants to solve the problem(s) in your question is obvious. But we are not going to just give you code. You should show you put in some effort, and then clearly indicate on what part you got stuck. You can reformat that question another zillion times but as long as you do not provide extra info and extra code that same question will remain closed. See the 5 different steps I found in your question, and try tackling them one by one. If you encounter a problem in one of those steps, just post a clear question on that step where you show your relevant code as well –  Robin Jul 23 '12 at 10:59
