I'm using camera like it was described here: Android Camera will not work. startPreview fails. If I use back camera it works fine! Preview works and I can take a picture.

However when I use front-face camera by setting parameter: parameter.set("camera-id", 2) it throws error on the camera.takePicture(...) method. Preview works fine, I can see myself on the SurfaceView. But I can't take a picture.

Here is error:

You should get another Camera-Instance. See Camera.open(int cameraId). You'll have to find out the Front-Facing Camera's ID and use that with the aforementioned method.

UPDATE:

Samsung Galaxy S with Android API level 7, 8 solution

After Camera mCamera = Camera.open() use setFrontCamera(mCamera):

void setFrontCamera(Camera camera) {
    Camera.Parameters parameters = camera.getParameters();
    parameters.set("camera-id", 2);
    // (800, 480) is also supported front camera preview size at Samsung Galaxy S.
    parameters.setPreviewSize(640, 480); 
    camera.setParameters(parameters);
}

It seems that you have to change the PreviewSize along with the id.

Hi. I can't use Camera.open(int cameraId), because it's available since API Level 9. But I want to run application on older systems: 8 and earlier. –  chivorotkiv Aug 4 '12 at 15:46
    
And yes, it works perfect for devices with API Level 9 and newer: shows preview, takes photo. But I'm trying to solve problem for API Level 8. –  chivorotkiv Aug 4 '12 at 15:51
