I have what I think is a simple project in which I am using Spring to manage JPA and and EclipseLink for my persistence unit. I'm using JavaFX for my front-end and I have split my project into the client module, common module and server module. I'm using Maven for my builds. I have been banging my head against a wall for a few days now trying to figure this out. I have tried different configurations of persistence units and servlet configurations and nothing seems to work. And the errors always seem to be very similar: something in the transaction manager configuration or usage is suspect.

All help is greatly appreciated. I'm new to this Spring JPA space, so excuse me if the problem isn't defined adequately.

The war file builds and deploys successfully on a GlassFish 3.1.2.2 server. My development environment is NetBeans 7.2.

Caused by: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: org.springframework.transaction.CannotCreateTransactionException

It seems there is error creating the transaction. It might be due to configuration error in the persistance.xml or glassfish configuration file.

EntityManagerFactory fails to locate the transaction from JNDI. I have not used glassfish that much. But this should be the clue to find the actual problem. There should be some way to verify whether JNDI resource is created in glassfish or not and use that accordingly.

EDIT

For quick solution, consider using transaction-type="RESOURCE_LOCAL" and providing relevant database connection, username & password information for the database should help.

Okay - nice catch Kowser, but it didn't fix it completely, I just get a new problem. I still get the same cause: Caused by: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: org.springframework.transaction.CannotCreateTransactionException but now I have this in the communication: Could not open JPA EntityManager for transaction. I still think there is a config issue, but I can't put my finger on it. – kpenrose Jul 26 '12 at 18:19

Just changing transaction-type to RESOURCE_LOCAL causes deployment problem: SEVERE: Exception while preparing the app : The persistence-context-ref-name [org.springframework.data.jpa.repository.support.JpaRepositoryFactoryBean/entity‌​Manager] in module [com.lamtec_NewTrialServer_war_1.0] resolves to a persistence unit called [NewTrials] which is of type RESOURCE_LOCAL. Only persistence units with transaction type JTA can be used as a container managed entity manager. Please verify your application. – kpenrose Jul 26 '12 at 18:40

Looks like you have a mismatch in transaction types, probably due to the configuration. I think you are using a combination of JTA and Entity based transactions. This whole area gets a bit messy but I think unless you are querying across a couple of databases, etc, then you can leave JTA out of it and just use simple Entity based transaction management (basically standard database level transactions).

I don't know much about EclipseLink but try using a persistence.xml that uses RESOURCE_LOCAL. Maybe something like this: http://www.vogella.com/articles/JavaPersistenceAPI/article.html#example_persistenceunit

If you really want to use full JTA then you probably can leave your persistence.xml as is and change the configuration of the EntityManager to use JtaTransactionManager. You'll have to google for more details on the web for this.

As a side note the 'ClassNotFoundException' is a bit misleading. This is only what the client throws when it tries to deserialize the real exception from the server. The real exception is the CannotCreateTransactionException, and this gets sent down the wire to your client, but the client does not have this JAR on its classpath so it can't deserialize it and then you see the ClassNotFoundException.

In a standard setup I think you will see the real exception in your server log. If not you could add a try-catch around the body of your server method, catch all and log it (or wrap an aspect around your service classes that does this magically).

Alternatively you could just add the spring persistence and hibernate jars to your client's classpath (by adding them to the POM). This adds bloat to your client but will allow the client to deserialize the exception and then log the full stack trace, etc.

Zonski - Success at last. The problem had more to do with the GlassFish deploy than anything else. I stuck with JTA, and stuck with the jndi lookup of the entity manager. Thanks for your help. – kpenrose Jul 30 '12 at 20:09

As per Exception it seems like your configuration in perrsistence.xml and Application-context.xml is not compatible for JTA transaction. You can see below configuration where I have used JpaTransaction manager for transaction and data source in JBoss AS server.
