And where is the result stored? I read that it is typically %eax, but a 64-bit uint is too wide for that. I can't find the result in the stack either.

Remaining questions:

  • Why is the unsigned int 6 nowhere in the stack?
    • Answer: It is in %eax.

I don't get it. e8 fc ff ff ff would call right into the fc byte, right? I don't see how that makes any sense at all. –  harold Jul 30 '12 at 13:16
yeah, I'd think that. But be careful, the %eip+1 is just my interpretation, based on the fact that objdump says the beginning of the instruction is at 0xe. When debugging it in gdb (after linking) it looks like this: 0x080483c2 <+14>: call 0x80483f0 <__fixunssfdi> which fits since hex(0x080483b4+0xf)=0x80483c3 –  Janus Troelsen Jul 30 '12 at 13:21

But you see that it's calling %eip+1 after linking too? What is __fixunssfdi? –  Janus Troelsen Jul 30 '12 at 13:24

You're looking at the contents of an object file which has not been linked yet, so external references have not been resolved. The function is probably calling some compiler helper and the call will be resolved at the link time. If you add the -r switch to objdump, it will print the relocation info at the call site.

As for the result, the convention on i386 is to use edx:eax pair for returning 64-bit integers.

Before the return of main info registers gives me: eax=0x6 edx=0x0. I always thought the right side of the colon was the least significant part, but in practice it looks like it's the reverse. So is eax the least significand? –  Janus Troelsen Jul 30 '12 at 14:10
