I would like to bin frequencies in such a way that each bin contains roughly the same amount. So far I managed to bin frequencies by splitting the range equally, but I haven't found a way of calculating the bin size automatically.

I think the easiest way would be to find a need a new way of calculating the vector timevec that I use for cut the data. But if anyone knows of a better way of doing the whole thing, please let me know. Thanks!

ggplot2's cut_number() is a handy convenience function that finds breakpoints defining n approximately equally populous intervals, and then bins the data using them. Sounds like it might do what you want.

require(ggplot2)
cut_number(sumsq$difftim, n = 10)

Checking its output:

A quick look at cut_number()'s code shows that it calculates the intervals using the unexported function breaks(). You can use it too, like this: ggplot2:::breaks(sumsq$difftim, "n", n=10). –  Josh O'Brien Jul 30 '12 at 15:32

Try the classInt package - it implements several methods for generating classification intervals, including equal numbers.
